With the audience exited about the match and commenting on how arrogant the "cannon fodder" of a challenger Yamada is, Aoki gets ready for his fight. The group wishes Ippo good luck and follow Aoki as they take their seats.
Despite claiming to be good against underdogs, Aoki has a hard time against his opponent and is sent down early in the fight. However, seeing the opportunity, he unleashes his frog punch and wins by decision.
While in his waiting room, Yamada is visibly upset and begins shaking in fear of Ippo's punches. He states he was not able to sleep the night before, and he knows that Ippo will fight him seriously after their meeting at the weigh ins. His coach says he was hoping Ippo would go easy on him, but Yamada tells him he wants to face Ippo at his best. He confesses that he started boxing because he idolized Ippo and kept on hoping to meet him one day in order to let him know how strong he has become. And having not wanting to do it with words, he took sever punishment to his body in an attempt to achieve the title fight faster and show him with his fists instead. He also lets his coach know that regardless of the night's result, he will be retiring. The coach understands Yamada's feelings and gives him his support.
As it is Ippo's turn to fight, he reminds himself that he must go at full power without holding back.
