Gregory is intrigued as to how Miyata was able to keep pushing forward despite the damage inflicted. He responds that it was only "spirit", to which Gregory says he must have more spirit than anyone. Before leaving, Gregory warns Miyata about Sakaguchi, who might want revenge against him. Miyata tells him there is no reason to worry, as the belt he just won will not be taken by anyone.

Sometime later at [[Kamogawa Boxing Gym|the gym]], [[Ippo|Ippo]] finds out that [[Date|Date]] will have a world title match against undefeated [[WBA|WBA]] super champion of the [[featherweight|featherweight]] [[weight classes|division]] [[Ricardo Martinez|Ricardo Martinez]]. [[Takamura|Takamura]] explains that had he given up on Martinez, Date would have had a better chance at the [[WBC|WBC]] title, which is the other title [[Japan|Japan]] has access to. However, Date's obsession with the only man who has ever defeated him is stronger than his desire to simply be world champion. Believing Date will win, Ippo wonders how strong the world's best really is. [[Kamogawa|Kamogawa]] then appears with an opportunity for Ippo to get his answer. He tells him that Martinez will be coming to Japan, and as a sparring partner he requested the [[JBC|JBC]] featherweight champion. Ippo tells his coach to please allow him to do it in order to try finding a weakness for Date's sake, but more importantly to experience the strength of the best in the world.
