Despite the excitement from others, Miyata and his father know that they are tied, given the fact that their win is speed is a loss in power. Miyata admits it was mostly luck that allowed him to counter, and knows Gregory has more power. Gregory is upset about being caught off guard, but knows that Miyata will eventually move in again, giving him the opportunity to use his bloody cross.
The second round begins with Miyata taking the initiative as he launches several jabs that keep Gregory away. Takamura points out how despite being his specialty, Miyata does not rely solely on the counter. However, Ippo recalls a conversation he had with Miyata about his fighting style, and predicts that the final punch will be a counter. Gregory tries to fight back, but Miyata dodges every hit and keeps attacking. Gregory then throws a left, which Miyata attempts to counter; as the cross takes shape and it appears Gregory is about to be hit, it is Miyata's head that is sent backwards from a blow that causes him to bleed profusely.
