- Title Page Character(s): Makunouchi Ippo
When Ippo, in the middle of shadow boxing stops, the coach asks what the problem is and the former says he needs to find a way to defeat Miyata's counter. The coach informs him that, at his current level, there would be no way for him to stop the counter, but reveals that there is a way to prevent it. The two enter the ring and the coach begins starving side to side. Ippo, realizing the point of the practice, is told that counters are useless unless the opponent rushes in. Should the opponent not rush in there can be no counter. He refers to this strategy as the "Wait Out Plan"'. Done for the day, the coach tells Ippo to buy proper shoes for the sport before he goes home.
Ippo stops by a sporting goods store and is almost tricked into buying an expensive brand of shoes more suited for out boxers. Miyata, who happened to be nearby, stops him and picks out cheaper shoes suited for in-fighters like Ippo. Miyata then buys bandages and leaves as well, but is stopped by a thankful Ippo who offers him a drink as thanks for his help.
As they converse about boxing, Ippo asks about Miyata's father, and Miyata tells the story about his father's great boxing career in the past that ended when he shattered his confidence along with his jaw from a single punch. Miyata also mentions that he became determined afterwards to prove his father's boxing wasn't wrong. With that, Miyata walks away, and leaves Ippo with a note that he will make it to the top using this style he adapted from his father, a style that he loves.
The next day at the gym Ippo is hitting mitts with the coach and stops to ask if he could instead try to take Miyata's counter head on. Reluctant at first, the coach agrees and the two leave for roadwork to start the training.
