As Ippo is having a hard time concentrating due to Miyata's departure, the coach decides to let Takamura watch over Ippo for a week, hoping this will knock some sense into him and sends them to road work together.
Ippo, who wonders what he did to make the coach angry, attempts to converse with Takamura about the latter's upcoming match but is unable to keep up with the pro's menu. Ippo admits that he's felt lonely since Miyata quit, causing Takamura to ask if he joined the gym to make friends and reminds him that Miyata plans to wait for him at the Rookie King tournament but it will never happen if he underestimates the pro ring.
Later that evening, Takamura offers to let Ippo come to his apartment. Takamura, who was so dehydrated he couldn't even pee, offers Ippo some ramen while all he eats is a tomato. Ippo is impressed Takamura can handle his diet so well and asks why he started boxing. He tells Ippo about how the coach found him fighting in the street and how good it felt to be cheered after he won his first fight. He tries to describe the feeling, but Ippo already understands. Because it's so late, Takamura offers to let Ippo sleep over. During the night Takamura's stomach hurts so much he ties his pillow to it, helping Ippo realize how boxing is a hard life for even him.
At the end of the week, Ippo's attitude has changed and the coach is impressed. Yagi informs the coach that Miyata has had his debut match already. During their road work, Takamura tells Ippo that the coach only yells at those he believes in. Ippo asks him about his match scheduled for the next day, and Takamura promises to show him a true Pro Match.
