Ippo hits the punching bag and looks forward to his rematch against Miyata when he overhears the latter knocking out a sparring partner. The coach, who has an errand to run, tells Ippo to spend the day shadow boxing. Confused as to what shadow boxing is, he fails at mimicking other gym members and decides to ask Miyata for advice but Miyata's father laughs at the idea and shoos Ippo away. Ippo later realizes that he must visualize his opponent in his mind when shadow boxing. He attempts to capture Miyata's shadow, but has trouble visualizing the latter's movements.
The next day Ippo watches intently at one of Miyata's sparring matches in hopes of capturing the latter's shadow, but the match ends too quickly for him to do so. Miyata noticing Ippo's gaze notes to himself that he will not let the difference between them fill up in the following months.
That night at home Ippo is frustrated about his inability to shadow box but remembering when he first caught the ten leaves, decides not to give up, no matter what.
Two days later Ippo once again tries to capture Miyata's shadow in one of the latter's sparring matches, this time focusing just on Miyata's skillful footwork. He tries to mimic Miyaya's movement himself, but fails. Takamura, wanting to help Ippo, attempts to step up but is stopped by the coach who tells him to let Ippo develop on his own. Ippo practices restlessly at home and, after three days, is able to capture Miyata's shadow and visualize it in his mind. Over the next two weeks he continues to shadow box with Miyata on his mind, but still falls short. The coach watches surprised at Ippo's development, but notes that he doesn't have a chance at winning unless he can learn to stop Miyata's "special move".
- The sparring partner that Miyata knocks out at the beginning of the chapter is named Aoki. Main character Aoki Masaru is later introduced in Coach's Training, but it is not established until Progress with Courage that they are the same character, so it is unknown whether their connection was meant from the start or not.
