After watching Mashiba winning the title, Umezawa and Ippo see the preview of the latter's upcoming fight against Date. Ippo tells Umezawa that despite the fact that reporters interrupt his training for interviews, he is not easily distracted, so he is still focused on the match.
When he arrives at the gym, Ippo notices all the reporters there to watch his sparring match. When the fight begins, Ippo seems to be dominated, but as Fujii states, he is only getting started. Once used to his opponent, Ippo easily outclasses and defeats him without much effort.
As he leaves the gym, Fujii begins making predictions to himself about the result of the fight against Date. He theorizes that any blow Ippo throws with his left hand, will be an opportunity for Date's heart break shot. Fujii hears more sparring going on, and he looks inside to see Ippo training with Kimura. The coach's strategy, is to keep a close distance to Date so he can not use his Sunday punch. Fujii sees this as a good plan, but thinks being too close will nullify Ippo's power. He however, proven wrong when Ippo lands a devastating blow at close distance. Fujii then remembers a theory stating that only ten centimeters of space are needed to land an effective punch.
