Aiming for the finish, Sanada sends his tsubame gaeshi, and on impact it produces a bloodied Ippo. however, Sanada then notices that the hit did not land clean, as Ippo used his own hand to lesser the impact on his jaw. With no mouthpiece in, Ippo bleeds profusely and Sanada takes advantage of the opportunity to punish hiss body more. He then lands a hit to the face, that sends Ippo down, but he manages to grab onto the ropes before landing. About to give in, Ippo begins thinking as the challenger for the first time and manages to stand up straight. The look in Ippo's eyes makes Sanada back up, but the punch Ippo throws almost makes him fall.

The bell rings and Sanada returns to his corner where he guarantees he will end the fight in the next round. Dankichi reflects on how proud he is, and believes destiny is offering him the chance of returning to Kamogawa the feelings that losing brought to him during the war. In Ippo's corner, Kamogawa tells him to use the next few rounds to recover, but he actually knows well that the next round will be the final. Ippo knows Kamogawa is only saying it to give him hope, but tells himself that even if he has only one second to move, he will do it at full power and end the match because he is the challenger.
