Walking back to their respective corners, both boxers refuse to take a seat, as they believe their physical and mental capabilities will diminish. They also know that the other one is thinking the upcoming round is the final and there is no time for small punches as their best moves will finish the fight.

Before the referee even has the chance to tell them, they both go on the attack. But Sendou instantly blocks, and protects his body, leaving everyone confused at the sight of the champion doing something so unusual. Takamura goes on to explain that he throws no jabs in order to save his strength for "the final duel". Ippo slowly begins to back up when face with Sendou's pressure, but tells himself not to be confused. Ippo begins the movement leading into the Dempsey roll, but Sendou stops it like he did in an earlier round, making Kamogawa apologize once again, as he could give no advice, and had no strategy to make Sendou back away for an effective Dempsey roll. With Ippo's Sunday punch ending in a failed attempt, Sendou goes for his own. His smash lands on Ippo's face, but the damage is minimal, given the fact that Ippo lands a body blow at the same time, further damaging Sendou's ribs. Ippo is the first to recover and deliver the next hit. He knows that it is his last chance, and attempts to finish it, but Sendou's eyes still display great determination.
