Instinct refers to a fighter's intuition for combat. It is often compared to an animalistic "sixth sense" and refers to a boxers intuition for where to punch[1], or likewise where their opponents will punch or move.[2] Often found in brawlers, boxers with great instincts are able to easily pick up on their opponents rhythm and respond accordingly on the fly, the spontaneous nature of which often leaves the realm of orthodox boxing. As such, instinctive fighters are often considered "wild" and "unpredictable". On the other hand, those without strong instincts will naturally stick more closely to textbook theory and practiced movements. However, it is possible to combine instincts with orthodox boxing, as seen in the case of Mamoru Takamura and Ricardo Martínez.
Takeshi Sendō, Wally and Takamura are all noted for having particularly outstanding instincts.
