Motivated by Miyata's match, Ippo spars with Aoki and Kimura in order to shorten the gap between the two of them. The coach and Yagi enter and note that Ippo's enthusiasm is breathing new life into the gym. As Ippo runs home, he notices a new bakery. When he goes in to purchase some bread, he sees that the girl from Miyata's fight works there, although she doesn't seem to recognize him. As he leaves, she gives him some extra bread for free because it's close to closing time and she doesn't want it to go to waste. Completely smitten, Ippo hopes to see her at another boxing match.

The next day at the gym, Ippo starts to overdo his training, so Aoki and Kimura make him take a break. As he does he suddenly smiles a goofy notril-flaring smile. Takamura recognizes Ippo's flared nostrils as a sign that he is thinking about girls, causing Aoki and Kimura to get in his face. Aoki tells Ippo that he knows from experience that women slow boxers down, but when Ippo asks what happened, Aoki simply says "don't remind me" and walks off. Takamura then explains to Ippo that the girl was extremely ugly and dumped him.

Fujii then arrives and updates Ippo on the tournament, informing him that Mashiba had advanced to the next round. He then tells him that his next opponent, Kobashi Kenta, gained an upset victory over a favorite.

  • This chapter marks the first mention of Aoki's weird taste in women.
