As Takamura implies, the person whose help Kimura requests is non other than Miyata. Kimura explains the situation to Miyata, but the latter says he is not one to help without reason and walks away. Kimura follows him after saying he does not want to run away, even if Mashiba is the monster who scared the first and second seeds away. While running, they encounter a group of people who are the type Kimura used to be. Seeing this, Kimura explains how much he loves boxing, and the reasons for which he wants the belt. Miyata then tells him he has an OPBF title bout scheduled and is willing to help Kimura if in return he helps him training for the OPBF champion who is an out-boxer as well.
Later that night at Takamura's place, Ippo is in a complicated position due to his relationship with Kumi. Figuring something is going on between them, Takamura repeatedly insist that Ippo confides in him his troubles. Doubtful at first, Ippo tells Takamura the events that took place when he last met with Kumi. After hearing the story, Takamura has Ippo calling to Kumi's house to explain that boxing is only a sport, and what happens in the ring should stay in the ring. Ippo tries to explain this to Kumi, but it turns out to be Mashiba himself on the other end of the phone. Before hanging up the phone, Mashiba leaves an intimidating message for Kimura. Takamura promises not to tell anyone about Ippo's problems with Kumi, but when Ippo arrives at the gym the next day, he finds out Takamura told everyone about Kumi, and they begin mocking him.
