Only a few seconds into the fight Kimura is already in trouble when facing a flicker jab he can not escape. With no other option but to keep trying to get in, he goes for his in fighting (surprising Mashiba), but is unsuccessful. He then tells himself that he will try as many times as he needs to, until he gets in. He is cornered by the flickers, and Mashiba initiates his usual knockout pattern, Kimura manages to escape, but the damage from the jabs is already visible. Despite being hurt over and over again, Kimura keeps pressing forward, surprising the audience and Mashiba himself. Miyata realizes that Mashiba is actually using Kimura as a sacrifice to prove himself to the world stage, but it might work against him, as Kimura could use the opportunity to land his move. He keeps receiving flick after flicker but does not switch from in-fighting (to Mashiba's annoyance), as he knows that the jab is just like Miyata's but from a different angle, which if he learns, he could get pass.
The first round ends and Mashiba "congratulates" Kimura for standing the round. Kimura calmly replies that three minutes is nothing compared to the five years he has been waiting.
