First Seed (第一シード, Dai-Ichi Shiido) is the 38th chapter of Morikawa Jouji's manga series Hajime no Ippo.

Ippo, the coach, Takamura, Aoki, Kimura, and Fujii watch the video of Kobashi Kenta and learn that he gained his upset victory over the favorite Yoshida Mitsuo by using numerous clinches, tiny jabs, and dodging to mess up his rhythm, resulting in a decision win. Takamura and the others tell Ippo he's lucky to have such a weak opponent and start to leave, but the video continues and shows the match of the charismatic first seed, Hayami Ryuuichi. Aoki and Kimura, jealous of his fan girls, say that a pretty boy can't be too tough and root for his opponent, Iwakawa. However, Hayami easily dodges Iwakawa's blows and defeats him in the first round with his Shotgun technique, hitting him 27 times in only a few seconds. When the coach compares him to Miyata, Takamura and Kimura begin discussing how Miyata and Hayami's "inevitable" match will go... right in front of Ippo. Ippo runs out of the room and Fujii apologizes to the coach for causing trouble by bringing the video, but the coach says it is good for Ippo to realize he has another obstacle before facing Miyata.

Ippo goes running and thinks about how tough the featherweights have it, but is nonetheless determined to continue with the tournament. Aoki runs up and promises to help Ippo with the training all the way. Keeping their distance far behind, Takamura and Kimura know that Aoki is only motivated to help Ippo because he is jealous of Hayami. That night at home, Ippo's mother trys to encourage him to go somewhere for Summer Break, but Ippo doesn't want to leave her alone with work. Ippo then gets a phone call from Takamura, who tells him that his title match has been decided so the whole gang is going to the beach for training.
