Ippo goes down against Nagumo

Nagumo downs Ippo.

Nagumo had a junior featherweight WBC title match against the champion. In order to train, he went to the Kamogawa gym to spar with the featherweight boxer Makunouchi Ippo. When the spar began, Nagumo hit Ippo with jabs while overwhelming him with his speed. When Ippo started his Dempsey Roll motion, Nagumo landed two jabs and Ippo went down. Kamogawa Genji stopped the spar immediately and Nagumo was asked to leave. Afterwards, he gained popularity for downing Ippo by the press. Later, Nagumo went to the Kawahara gym to spar with OPBF featherweight champion Miyata Ichirō. After both boxers decided to not wear the sparring headgear, the spar began. When Miyata tried to counter Nagumo, Nagumo was able to lessen the impact by slipping away. Nagumo used left jabs and speed to attack Miyata's guard and escape Miyata's punches. After countering Miyata twice, Miyata's trainer stopped the spar. Nagumo left with his coach in a good mood.

Nagumo sent tickets to his junior featherweight WBC title match to Ippo and Miyata as thanks for the spars and to help boast his accomplishments. When his match arrived, he went to the Ryōgoku Kokugikan. When the match began, Nagumo immediately used his speed and left jabs, hitting the champion's guard and getting away from his attacks. As Nagumo attacked, he used a combination of two lefts followed by a right, which the champion began to read. When the champion tried to counter Nagumo's right, Nagumo blocked and hit him with a counter of his own after the champion threw a follow-up. Nagumo proceeded to attack the champion, however, Nagumo went down from a counter after throwing a right. When Nagumo got up, his punches only hit the champion's guard, and, after getting hit, Nagumo clinched. After the clinch was broken, the two had a close range exchange, which ended with Nagumo going down. The referee ended the match immediately, resulting in Nagumo's loss.
