Featherweight is a weight class division in the sport of boxing. The majority of the characters in the series are Featherweight boxers because that is the protagonist's weight class.

About[]

A featherweight boxer weighs in at 9 stones (60 kilos) or under (at 126 pounds or under in the USA). In the early days of the division, this limit fluctuated. The British have generally always recognized the limit at 126 pounds, but in America the weight limit was at first 114 pounds. An early champion, George Dixon, moved the limit to 120 and then 122 pounds. Finally, in 1920 the United States fixed the limit at 126 pounds.

Main Featherweight boxers[]

Notable featherweights include Ippo Makunouchi, Ichirō Miyata, Eiji Date, Takeshi Sendō, Manabu Itagaki, and World Champion Ricardo Martínez.

Miyata Ichirou is reportedly not suited for the featherweight division; his weight class is said to be limited at Lightweight and Junior Lightweight, though the manga doesn't specify which weight class he is suited for.

Trivia[]

  • The average height of a featherweight is 5 feet 6 inches tall, and the weight class is heavily filled with out-boxers who utilize speedy footwork and rapid jabs. This makes Ippo an outsider, as he is an inch shorter than average and has relatively poor footwork; but at the same time, 126 lbs. is his natural weight, so the featherweight class is perfectly suited for him.
