When Fujii and the parents return, they see Kimura sent back by a punch from Mashiba, but the latter's face now has damage from a punch of the former. Knowing that in order to get world attention he needs to finish the match, Mashiba unleashes the flickers, but this time Kimura appears to have figured out the timing. The challenger manages to get into range and begins an in-fight. Kamogawa explains that Kimura was actually taking all the punishment, as he waited for Mashiba's speed to drop in order to be able to get closer. Kimura keeps pushing forward with Mashiba unable to shake him off or stop the body blows that keep connecting one after the other and put him against the ropes. With Kimura full of determination and wanting to prove himself more than ever before, Mashiba recognizes the glare in his eyes as the same glare Ippo displayed during his fight at the East Japan Rookie King Tournament. Mashiba's subconscious then warns him of the danger his opponent poses despite the fact that he has been dominated for over twenty minutes, which makes Mashiba realize how much he underestimated his opponent.
