Summary[]
Oda's punch leaves a cut on Ippo's left eye, causing the referee to call for a doctor to see if Ippo is able to proceed. Ippo's determined look and the crowd's cheers bring the doctor to the decision to let him continue, warning that if the cut reopens he will stop the fight, which resumes just in time to be stopped by the bell. Kamogawa uses ice and avitene on the cut, but tells Ippo that while fixing the cut is a cut-man's job, making sure it doesn't get reopened is the boxer's job. While he tells Ippo to end it in the next round, Oda comes to the same decision but realises that his legs are beginning to fail.
The third round begins and Ippo, determined not to lose, goes for Oda, whose damage becomes visible through his legs. Oda aims for Ippo's cut, but he dodges and goes in for a body blow. Oda stops him with a clinch and takes the opportunity to attack the cut again. The referee separates them, but the blood from the cut has starts to flow again. He also notices that because Ippo can't use his left (as he uses it to guard his eye) the aim of his right is off, but he also notices that Oda has possibly used the last of his strength. Oda knocks Ippo into the ropes, but the latter, unwilling to lose, suddenly switches to a southpaw stance.
