Two days after the match, Kimura is still reflecting on the events, and tells himself he has no regrets and did all he could to get the title. He also thinks about all the people who helped him through the battle.
At the gym, it's members (specially Aoki) are depressed over Kimura's retirement, but Takamura pretends to not be affected. Kamogawa tells the group that there is no sense in thinking about it and they must go on. Yagi informs them that Kimura might pass by during the day, which causes Aoki to feel depressed again. seeing this, Takamura cheers him up in his own way, by telling to not be pathetic and to work double now that one is missing. Kimura, who is standing outside of the gym and listening to everything, hears how Ippo's mother named his dog in katakana before leaving, as he does not feel like facing them at the moment.
Kimura walks off and wonders what he will do from now on after living a life that was focused solely on boxing for five years. He then begins to ask himself what it would have been like if he had reached three more centimeters. He begins crying as he is unsure whether he actually tried his best. He decides that if he leaves, he will regret it forever.
When he returns to the gym, he hears his friends talking about a farewell party. When Ippo wonders about the possibility of him reconsidering retirement, Takamura says there is no way he could take it back after publicly announcing it the way he did. Knowing that Takamura is right, Kimura once again plans to let go of boxing, but when Wanpo comes out, he gets an idea. Hearing Wanpo, the group goes out and see Kimura, who informs them that the boxer called Kimura Tatsuya is retired, but he will be changing his name to katakana and start over again.
