After only thirty seconds into the beginning round of the match, both Ippo and Sendou are bloodied, with the latter visibly damaged. Kamogawa urges Ippo to finish the fight before Sendou recovers. Hearing this, Ippo sets a third Dempsey roll in motion, but Sendou regains control over his legs and dashes forward, successfully stopping Ippo's move before it gains full power. With a series of blows, Sendou pushes Ippo to the ropes, and breaks his guard with a smash. As Sendou prepares to deliver another blow to the now unguarded challenger, the later realizes he can not block, but notes to himself that he already expected it, so he throws a punch of his own. Both coaches urge them to keep the fight at close range, with Mari noting that at the current distance between them, Sendou has the advantage, and Fujii noting that any close and it will be Ippo's advantage. Both fighters spread their stances and begin throwing punches at each other, marking the beginning of a seemingly even exchange that neither of them plans to back away from.
