At an open sparring session, OPBF featherweight champion Arnie Gregory demonstrates his power with multiple opponents he successively knocks out. His manager then begins asking if there are any other challengers after Miyata's defeat, which upsets, Miyata's father, and Mari, who speaks in the challenger's defense. Despite hearing how good Miyata is, the manager states Gregory will not lose as he will be utilizing his special move; the bloody cross.
The Kamogawa Boxing Gym members reflect on what kind of weapon the "bloody cross" could be, and Takamura expresses his disliking towards Gregory's manager. He says how he would destroy Gregory if they were in the same class, and tells Ippo to get ready in case Miyata loses. Fujii tells the boxers that in terms of strength, Gregory compares to Ippo, but his technique and speed are surpassed by Miyata's, and he chooses the latter to win.
One week later at the weigh ins, the manager notices Miyata's relief at making the weight, and teases him about it. In response, Miyata sates that when the match is over, Gregory will lose the belt and he will be unemployed. When the father-son duo leaves, Gregory notes that the rumors about him struggling to make weight are true, and that if Miyata uses his specialty; counters, the match will be ended by the bloody cross.
As he hydrates and regains some weight with his father, Miyata shows extreme confidence in his skills. However his father worries about how when using the same example about the pencil they used earlier; if it is sharpened too much it will break. Miyata tells him he is not worried about the bloody cross, and will take the belt no matter what.
The following night, it is the main event's time, and before leaving for the fight, Miyata remembers what he promised Ippo. He plans to "fill the gap" and goes for the title.
